  • Garage Sale for Orphans on May 5

    Garage Sale for Orphans

UPDATE (05/06/12): Thank you for supporting our Garage Sale for Orphans. We raised $2,641.55 toward the construction of a safehouse for orphans in Haiti. Glory be to God!

"Learn to do good. Seek justice. Help the oppressed. Defend the cause of orphans. Fight for the rights of widows." - Isaiah 1:17

On Saturday, May 5, 8:00 am–noon, in Humphrey Hall, Westbury UMC will have a churchwide Garage Sale for Orphans with all proceeds going to vulnerable children in Haiti.

Funds will support the building of a safe-house for orphaned children in Ferrier, Haiti, which sits on the border of Haiti and The Dominican Republic. Currently, human trafficking is quite prevalent along this border, as traffickers prey upon poor, vulnerable and abandoned children. For $6,000, Haitian leaders and pastors can construct a safe place for children to live, grow and be educated. The homes will rescue orphans from the streets and keep them out of the hands of human traffickers. Get more details at www.garagesale4orphans.org.

Here are three ways you can help:

Discipleship Groups

Westbury UMC’s discipleship groups are about learning to be like Jesus—in worship, in study, in service. As you read through these discipleship opportunities, we hope you will find (as others have) a place to become a follower of Jesus who participates in transforming the community and the world. Groups meet on Sunday mornings and special studies, including a young adult group called Mars Hill, are held throughout the week.

For more information, contact Rev. DeAndre Johnson at deandre1@westburyumc.org or 713-723-0175.

In addition to Adult Sunday School, classes for children are held from 9:30–10:30 am in the Children’s Wing. The goal is for children (K–5) to learn from all 66 books of the Bible. See Children for details.

Sunday School for 6th–12th graders is in the Youth Wing on the 2nd floor of the west end of the building. See Youth for details.

Mars Hill (Young Adults)

The purpose of Mars Hill is to provide a place for 18–29 years old to grow spiritually within a community of peers and discover a deeper connection with God. This group meets for discussion and fellowship on Wednesday nights at 7:00 pm.

PrimeTimers

PrimeTimers is the senior adult ministry of Westbury UMC. Activities include monthly luncheons with a program, field trips to points of interest, 55 Alive auto safety classes for senior adults, and flu shots and other health screenings.

From 11:00 am to 1:00 pm, the PrimeTimers meetings are the fourth Monday of each month, except for major holiday months. Lunch is covered dish, except for the summer months, when they take a rest from the kitchen and bring a sack lunch. Programs are geared to interests of seniors and are both informative and entertaining.

PrimeTimers also go on field trips to all kinds of fun places, at very reasonable cost. Trip events include shows, museums, sports events and sites of historical interest. Occasionally the group will even travel to Austin or other cities of interest!

Membership in PrimeTimers is open to all persons over 50, regardless of church affiliation. Dues are only $5 per year!

Piecemaker Quilters

Since 1992, the Piecemaker Quilters have worked to achieve greater skill in quilting, promoted Christian fellowship, made items for donation to charitable organizations and raised money for church-supported mission projects through the sale of the items they create. They meet every Wednesday in W-201, 7:00–9:00 pm, and newcomers are welcome to join in!
